There are two types of outlines: one you’ll send to a prospective publisher (formal) and one that’s a personal guide for your story (informal).
First we’ll talk about the informal type. No one ever has to see this outline, so adapt it to whatever works best for you. I begin by taking my idea and expanding it into scenes that follow my plot. As it grows and takes shape it can change many times. Remember to always allow plenty of room for notes.
EXAMPLE: I have a story idea, off the top of my head, about an alien crash landing on a NY rooftop.
Opener: Begin story at mid crash. NOTE: All action, utilize fear to freeze her momentarily before snapping back.
Scene 1: Guy investigates and finds beautiful (and, oh joy, a female) alien amid his rooftop garden.
Scene 2: She needs XY rock to get ship going again. NOTE: Found only in the Arizona desert
Scenes 3-23: They go in search of rock and fall in love on the way.
Scene 24: Does he stay; does he go? Will she stay; will she go?
Closer: They live happily ever after. NOTE: Add epilogue?
Obviously your outline will be more extensive than the example.
Many writers hate the idea of the outline. A few reasons to consider at least trying it would be: many publishers require one sent with your query letter, it can help you maintain focus when using several plot threads, and it can help you later when you find yourself floundering and lost within your plot.
An outline is not meant to constrain creativity. Never be afraid to deviate from your outline. Use it as a guide for focus only. Remember, there are a lot of roads out there and no one way to reach your destination.
Now for Formal Outlines: You’ve just written the great American (Chinese or Russian) novel. However, XYZ Publishing wants an outline of your book with your query letter.
Now What? Whether you wrote your novel using an outline or not, you may be splattering your favorite curse word about the room about now. Let’s face it, starting an outline from scratch may be just as difficult as making sense out of that stack of research, notes and scribbles you’ve used to write your novel.
Take heart, author. Creating an outline for a publisher is as simple as listing your chapters with short (one or two sentence) descriptions.
Example: (We’ll use our fictitious example from above)
Chapter One: The Eagle Has Landed.
Just when you thought it was safe to stroll through your NYC rooftop garden, a beautiful alien has the gall to use it as a landing strip.
The Catch: You knew there had to be one. The hard part is creating descriptions that will drive the publisher to request your manuscript. Best bit of advice I’ve found? Show them what’s in it for them and their potential readers.

How do we deal with the New Orleans Soup Bowl after we finally get everyone out, shore up the levee and complete the 1.7-month draining period. Well unfortunately due to the damage, sewage, dead bodies and disease, we must burn it to protect our civilization from the spread of deadly epidemics. Once the water is drained it will look like a bomb went off anyway, it is already a living hell, simply finish it off and burn it to the ground. And then evaluate and decide if starting over makes sense? It will not be good for farmland due to the chemicals in the ground water. It will not be good for much of anything in those lower areas. Perhaps lake expansion makes more sense. Make the lower areas a giant addition to the port? That makes sense. But putting more housing below sea level is stupid. Only poor people will live there, after this last disaster. The levee on that side is not worth redoing. The real estate values there have truly sunken.
Have a company like Bechtel Corporation come in and build a new levee across the higher ground, use those lower areas for marinas, parking of port barges and assets like tug boats, etc.

That company is completely without limits, both politically, globally and the size of the project hardly concerns them. They are totally nuts and can make anything work and have been doing it for 100-years. Look at some of their projects; no other company on Earth has the balls to do such a project.
We must drain it, burn what’s left at the lower levels, put in another different higher ground system which is at sea level and start there. Dig out the other lower level and refill it as part of an expanded port to serve the growing needs of our population base and support our exports from the highly productive Midwest. Let’s think ahead and keep our emotions out of this. We must build our Nation’s Infrastructure strong as can be for the next 200-years of our prosperity. Think on this.

Scotland is never far away from their history. Everywhere if you look are visual reminders of their past. Crumbling towers bring to mind a Medieval style of living that we can scarce imagine. Stand in the center of a castle keep and picture yourself drawing water for the only well, scrubbing linen clothing in wood ashes until your knuckles are raw. Ragged openings in meter thick walls give way to vast panoramas of rolling green hills and soaring birds.
These rock piles built in the 900s protected the lord and his servants from the predications of neighboring lords on the lookout for booty and larger possessions. Constantly warring with Cromwell, the castles were built on the steepest hills the Scots could find, surrounding their homes with crenellated battlements and thick oak doors.
Preserved castles reveal more of the way of Scottish life. Intricate tapestries adorn the walls with portraits of the then Queen and her relatives done up in monster oil paintings. Royal bedrooms, however exquisitely furnished, gave hints of the primitive accommodations. Toilets consisted of a hole in the wall leading to the outside court. Running water was non existent and the large kitchen areas must have needed dozens of workers to keep it going.
Aware as the Scottish people are of their heritage, the gray stone buildings hide an up-to-date infrastructure involving the usual TV’s, computers, washers, dryers and electric stoves. The citizens I met seemed full of humor, practical and quite literate. Slightly amused at lost travelers needing directions, they nevertheless selfishly took the time to steer them in the right direction. Any inquiries in a shop would generally be followed up with a grand tour of the establishment and a canny sales pitch in the bargain.
Driving on the left side of the road takes a little getting used to and some roundabouts can be scary but the Scottish drivers take every slow down in stride. Bicycling is quite popular in the summer and many local trips are made this way. There are few bicycle paths bordering the narrow streets as there are in Germany so care must be taken when barreling along their winding avenues. The Scots are in love with building stone walls probably due to the plethora of rocks in the tilled fields. Stone masonry reaches a high plateau with exactly fitted gray granite everywhere you look.
Also predominant are the lovely gardens and borders in public areas as well as in private yards. The story book image of a rose covered cottage is a reality in Scotland.
Though the temperature rarely goes below freezing, the long months of winter and spring are filled with stiff winds, a cloud filled sky and weather that can change from nasty to sunny in an instant. Like Florida, if you don’t like the weather, just wait a moment. This climate can support many hard and not so hardy plants in the garden. Everyone has a herb garden and the size of the vegetables is almost unbelievable. Summer temperatures hover around seventy degrees but a handy jacket is advisable.
Edinborough is the center of most activity, but bus tours are a must have for a complete look at the country. You may encounter a few unfamiliar dishes but mostly the cuisine is delicious. You will dine in an old world atmosphere that is poorly copied elsewhere. Scotland will open your mind and create indelible memories.

I recall an era where laptops for gaming were a niche thing. Despite the fact they were not fantastic sellers they did have great mark ups. These desirable notebook computers were just not affordable. Plainly they were the best laptops available. Regardless of the excitement created I do not believe they were amazing sellers because I do not believe purchasers would buy laptops instead of desktop computers as they were so costly. Things appear as it they are set to shift though because now the gaming portables market has caught the attention of larger brands.
Gaming portables are traditionally not affordable by most people and big brands know they can take advantage of the massive profit margins even more with their low fixed costs. As the profit potential on mass market notebook computers have become so tiny, manufacturing specialized laptops for gaming is one tactic to render a higher gross margin. They can also use their gigantic marketing funds to sway buyers further into spending their savings or getting out the charge cards to buy laptops like these ones. I’m trying to think what the the reaction from local resellers will be. I’m already seeing some price reductions. I believe once it gets mass marketed it will not have the same appeal. I think customers will trust the larger brands more if they get something high priced.
Surprisingly, the notebooks they are making are a couple of the best laptops to present. I reckon that local system builders could still have an opportunity. This is a large selling proposition that must be mentioned. Buyers of this type are generally extremely educated with regards to the technology involved, and so are able to carry out spec for spec evaluations. For this type of segment, the components are generally more sought after rather than the looks.
Of course from the buyers way of seeing things, its a great situation. High end technology will be available to the masses when prices are driven lower. I’m not really sure any of that would occur however. I doubt if the overall price of notebook computers will be reduced but new notebooks are normally at specific starting prices. It is hard to tell what will take place now that the established manufacturers have become involved in making laptops for gaming.
