Paralegal School – Finding the Right College

Posted by admin in Biz

Anyone with even a faint familiarity with the law understands that for a lawyer to practice law they must pass the bar exam. On the other hand, few realize that another key player in most law offices today; the paralegal, is not required to pass any type of post graduation test to enter the field. That’s right, after nearly a half century of existence the paralegal position is still an unlicensed profession. Certainly, the importance of becoming certified has increased and gained stature but the fact remains that becoming certified is still voluntary.

Crucial benchmarks to gauge when examining the standard of a paralegal program:

1. Paralegal school curriculum should focus on teaching practical job skills alongside a solid legal theory foundation. Concentration courses should revolve around topics like litigation and legal writing, legal ethics, contract and business organization. In addition to developing a usable knowledge of the law, a high quality paralegal school training program will emphasize creative and critical thinking, organizational and computational skills. The overall development of the student should also be a critical objective along with some type of real world experience like an internship before graduation.

2. Commitment by the faculty and the paralegal curriculum director to the importance of the paralegal in the whole legal system is a must. Additionally, they must have the proper academic credentials to be able to teach the subject. Ideally, the paralegal program director should have a law degree but if not, they should have some type of advanced paralegal degree. As for the instructors they should be experts in the subjects they are teaching. How they came to become an “expert” can be debated as to what is the best path but regardless of the journey they need to have the proper expertise.

3. Is the tried and true campus classroom learning model best for you or is the so-called “modern” online training environment a better fit? An essential question that needs to be answered before you take the plunge and decide to pursue your paralegal degree via the online learning model. Another key question includes how you’ll receive the training. Will it be through web based courses or telecourses or interactive video or something else? Furthermore, one of the most important questions is very simple, “Can you learn online?”

Obviously, seeking a paralegal career is not for just anyone but it is for those that welcome research, have top notch writing and organizational skills and can work under a deadline and for that possess those skills this is an exciting and expanding field that offers financial rewards and professional fulfillment.
